Learn More about Lagunas de Montebello National Park

Lagunas de Montebello National Park is located in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. The park is known for its numerous lakes, which are surrounded by forests and mountains. In total there are 59 lakes, but only 10 of them are accessible to the public. In most of them you can swim, so if you have the time, we recommend you spend a whole day in them.

What to do in the Lagunas de Montebello?

Stroll along Lago Montebello

Among the first group of lakes managed by the ejidatarios is Lake Montebello, and it is precisely this that gives this fascinating national park its name. It is one of the largest and you can swim in it. If you walk a little to the left, there is a rocky area where incredible cliffs are formed.

Cinco Lagos

The next one is Cinco Lagos, so called because it is just a set of lakes that are connected to each other. The most representative of this place is the panoramic view from the point of view, it is really an obligatory stop inside the National Park, it has an incomparable aspect.

Rafting trips and kayak rentals are also offered here, but you will not be able to swim. The food stalls sell local coffee, which is some of the best not only in Chiapas, but in all of Mexico, so don't miss it.

Swimming and boat ride Lago Pojoj

And then there's Lake Pojoj, our favorite. Besides being super crystal clear, it has the most spectacular shades of water, an impressive mix of indigo blue, turquoise and emerald green.

In this lake, we strongly recommend you to take the raft and go to the island in the middle. There you can swim and even jump into the water from a platform - a paradise and super fun!

Lago Tziscao

Lake Tziscao is the largest lake and home to the village Tziscao. In the gazebo there are several stalls where you can eat delicious food and at a very good price. In the village is the place where the huts are located and stand on the lake shore. Without a doubt, we recommend you to stay there, one of the best places to see a sunrise.

Bathing with the locals at the Liquidámbar Parador

This parador is part of Lake Tziscao, but it is so large that it encompasses several points of interest. Liquidámbar is where the locals come to bathe, the entire shoreline is shallow and the view towards the mountains is spectacular, we highly recommend it!

When to go to Lagunas de Montebello National Park:

It is very hot all year round, but from November to February the weather is much more pleasant. Avoid going from June to October, with the rain, you can't swim in the waterfalls, and the water from the rains dyes the waterfalls a coffee color. If you don't like crowds, avoid long weekends or vacations, especially at Easter.

Travel tips for Lagunas de Montebello National Park

-Take enough cash as there are no ATMs and card payments are not accepted locally.
-It is necessary to drive to the lakes as there are about 15 kilometers of road between the first and the last lake.
-If you don't have much time, we recommend that you go to the ejidal lakes first, which we found to be the most beautiful.
-Bring a bathing suit and shoes. Even the tours give about 20 minutes to swim in Lake Pojoj.
-Wear sunscreen and a hat or cap.
-There are rafting trips on several lakes, the most recommended is on Lake Pojoj where they take you to an island and you can swim.
